Neptune in Pisces

On February 4, 2012, the planet Neptune moved into the zodiac sign of Pisces.

This configuration will last until 2025. This is a very rare occurrence.

It only happens every 150-160 years.

I believe that this period will be one of the most creative, artistic, and inspirational periods

in the next 150 years. This period will be a rediscovery of the classical arts,

combined with contemporary thinking.

I choose to call it the, New Renaissance.

The Renaissance, 1400-1650, was triggered by the invention of the printing press.

Printed books made the transfer of knowledge easy.

In this, New Renaissance, with the advent of the net and the right astrological configuration,

Neptune in Pisces, I believe that there will be an explosion of creativity.

For the fist time in history, all peoples from all over the planet,

will be able to share thoughts and ideas, creating an artistic collective consciousness,

the world has never known.

In commemoration of this moment, Aria, found this beautiful,

fine solid silver Neptune Pisces, cuff, bracelet, as a present to me.

I photographed the bracelet in a salt water aquarium that belonged to a friend.

The most important element in the photos, was patience.

My Little Pony

Beautiful flower crown, antique carousel horse, gothic cross, vintage victorian dress,

Evander Preston Jewelry, graciously loaned us this antique horse for the shoot.

Because of the weight of the horse, we had to put it on a dolly and

wheel it down the middle of the street to the location, 2 blocks away.

Then 4 people lifted it on top of an old wooden picnic table and we bolted it down

to keep the horse and Aria, safe.

Aria, loved this shoot. She felt like a princess.

Aria, youtubed, how to use it, when she first got it. Everybody wants to make this very complex. Aria, found that it is really quite simple. She has super long hair down to her butt.

She found that all you have to do is, sprinkle a little into the palm of your hand,

take some in your finger tips and put it where you need it. Hair is magically whipped into shape.

Got to try it. You won’t believe how well it works. 50mL is about the size of a lipstick tube.

This convenient size makes it easy to carry with you everywhere, for quick touch ups.

A little bit goes along way.

In Between Times

The ancient Druids called fog, “In Between Times”. I believe, what they meant was,

a time that was magical and all things were possible.

Aria and I were at the beach on New Year’s Eve, awaiting the sun set on the final day of 2011.

Every thing was normal and suddenly . . .

This bank of fog came rolling in from the north-west, across the water. Just there and no where else. It was pure magic, surreal, very Stephen King ish. It was blue sky everywhere else, except

over the water in this one area, thick rolling magical Fog.

The pictures that are here are a 10 minute period and then we were surrounded by thick fog.

I used a Sony DSC W350 that I carry in my backpack. All natural light.

Black on Black Matte Nails French Tip

I was Google ing around Halloween, for black polish and I saw how beautiful the black matte polishes looked. But, most bloggers said, the mattes all seemed to chip easily and did not wear well.   Question, What chips first on Nails, Answer, the tip.
So, Tip them!   Sally to the rescue. Sally Hanson hard as what? Nails.

Aria and I found, Zoya Matte Velvet lacquer, Dovima/Mat ZP499, for the black matte.
Apply, 3-4 coats with no base coat underneath. The Zoya matte dries very quickly.

With a steady hand, tip the Nails, (one coat) of Sally Hansen’s. Black Heart 880.
No top coat, it will kill the matte finish of the matte.    Voila! Black on Black, Sexiness!

Testing out our new mani, we decided to try a place called “Chill”. Chill and Steam are 2 restaurants, with separate entrances, in one spot. Steam, is a coffee shop. Chill, is a tapas Restaurant. We were thirsty and hungry, so we decided to to have Cappuccinos and desert . . . . . Bananas Foster to be precise.
“Bananas Foster”, Bananas flambeed in spiced rum, real butter, and dark brown sugar, laid over a perfect crape, with ice cream drizzled over warm bananas.     Mmmmmmm.

When I shoot natural light the most important thing is to find a magical location. I look for a

place where the light is beautiful and then adjust my lens choice to fit the subject and the

background.

Location scouting is one of the most important and least understood things that a photographer

must learn. Finding a magical location that will fit my needs, for at particular shoot, requires preparation.

The LOCATION BOOK

Your camera phone or small digital camera is all you need and you can easily make up a

location book of fabulous spots.

Shoot lots of photos of places you like, print them out and put them in a book.

Remember,to take notes on time of day and season of the year.

Now, when you are ready to shoot and you need the right location, you already have the

Perfect Magical Place.

Mermaid from Atlantis

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to photograph a beautiful Mermaid, visiting from the mystical continent of Atlantis. It was truly an honor.

Kai, is a working model, that is wearing an incredible mermaid costume, created by her mother for Halloween. Kai’s mother, Julie, designed and created this Atlantan Mermaid outfit, to be functional for trick or treating. It has a fish tail skirt instead of a “fish tail”, to allow Kai to walk from house to house, go to parties and not flop around like a fish out of water. The fabric on the skirt looks like scales, the shell pearl encrusted top and the crown are fit for an Atlantean Princess.

Normally, I love to find natural light that is magical, without a lot of modification. In this case I decided to add an off camera, portable flash. This allowed me to keep the magic of the “Golden Hour” and still bring out the sparkle and texture in the outfit.

I had my assistant move around to different spots while I was shooting, adding just a whisper of fill light, where I thought it was needed. I filtered the Sony HVL-F58AM flash with a Rosco, tough UV filter and Rosco, 1/8 cto, held in place, on the flash with an old bicycle tire that has been cut into pieces like a big rubber band. This method of adhering the filters to the flash, is easy and quick. I think, it is far superior to tape because there is no glue residue left on the flash that will attract dirt, sand and all sorts of junk.

The Chair

A fabulous chair creator, Island Time Design, made this wonderful beach chair from the wood of an old recycled picnic table. It is regal, spacious and very comfortable. The chair has a umbrella holder, a drink holder and the arms are wide enough to rest a book or a plate of food. It is the perfect beach chair.

These photos were taken with natural light, in the Golden Hour, the hour before sunset. The months of October, November and December, when the days are warm with gentle breezes, are the Beach Rats, favorite time of year. The Beach, with all of it’s ever changing beauty and very few people. Perfect!

Magical Places

Great photographers have a knack for finding wonderful locations with beautiful light. When the light is magic you don’t need a lot of extra lighting modifiers and more time can be utilized making magical pictures of fabulous models.

Magical places, change with the time of day, the seasons of the year and the weather. When you find one of these places consider the time of day and make sure that the duration of the magical light is long enough to complete the shooting of your idea.

Magic is Magic and it is heard to explain. I love shooting beauty and fashion, so I am always hunting magical locations with the quality of light that I think is magical. What I consider magic, a light that makes the model look beautiful, other people my consider very muggle ( a la - Harry Potter).

In this photo, a wonderful magical location for beauty, the light is coming from the rear, a dark green background, and a ton of fill coming from the crushed white shell on the ground in front of the model. For me, this is pure magic.

Afternoon Delight

We were out and about on a thrifting-vintage hunting adventure in the beautiful down town district of Saint Petersburg. It started to sprinkle and we were in need of shelter and refreshment. We were ready for a coffee, a mid afternoon pick me up. Earlier in the day we had come across an Italian cafe and espresso bar, Moscato’s Bella Cucina, and decided to go back and check it out. Sitting outside underneath an umbrella we watched the people scurry around in the rain, as we enjoyed hot cappuccinos. I must say this was the best cappuccino that I have had since I was in Milan. We decided to get a cannoli to accompany our cappuccinos. The cannoli’s arrived with such a beautiful presentation. Decadently dipped in chocolate, served with whip cream, garnished with fresh strawberries and dusted with powdered sugar. We will definitely be returning to our new favorite cafe, the prices were very reasonable, the food was amazing and the service was stupendous.

Chromogenic Film Test 2 XP2 Super

Chromogenic film is B-W film that has a color negative film base with out the color couplers.

I love shooting film. Chromogenic film (color negative B-W film) is a pleasure to work with.

It is developed in C-41 color negative chemistry on a machine. The film chemistry and

development time is very consistent. Once, you get your film exposure calculated to match

the machine development, it is extremely easy to be consistent in the final results.

There are 2 different kinds of Chromogenic Film, that are still available, Kodak 400CN Pro

and Ilford XP2 Super. This was Ilford XP2 Super developed in Kodak C-41 chemistry

and color scanned.

I find this combination, creates a wonderful tonal range. What I love about this process,

is being able to tone the film.

I toned this film in Lightroom and in Photoshop, using many different techniques.

When printing in the darkroom I used to Selenium tone and Sepia tone a lot of my prints.

The tonal range in the finished print, was so beautiful using Ilford film.

Now, I love using the same toning ranges in Lightroom and Photoshop.

Chromogenic Film Test 1

I Love Film. Analog film cameras see things differently. I don't really know how to explain it.

I have tried, with no really good personal understanding. It is the magic of film.

I grew up on film. I developed my first roll of film and made my first contact print when

I was 11 years old, in my fathers amateur darkroom. It was, "Love at First Sight".

Watching white paper turn into "Magic," I was mystified.

As time went on I discovered the Ilford chromogenic film XP2. I loved printing it in

B&W and toning the prints. I also loved having it printed in color, with the endless

possibilities available.

These photos we shot with the Kodak chromogenic film 400CN Pro. They were developed in Kodak C-41 chemistry. Then they were scanned in color. I find the color palate interesting and pleasing.

Have you ever shot either of these films? What are your thoughts and how do you process them to completion?

Long Lenses

I love how long lenses isolate the subject from the background.

If you look at the picture with the shoes and study the sand, you can understand how lenses work, especially long lenses. The "Rule" of lenses is, " from the point of focus (the rivets on the shoe), the area of sharp focus is 1/3 in front and 2/3 in back". All lenses work this way. It is easy to see, the area of sharp focus or the Depth of Field (DOF), with long lenses.

Look at the sand and you can see the sand in sharp focus 2 inches in front of the shoes and about 4 inches in back of the shoes. I focused on the rivets on the shoe.

These pictures where shot with a Sony A700 and a Sony 70-200 f2.8G lens, shot with

Aperture Priority a f2.8. The method that I use is "Focus, Hold - Recompose".

I focused on the eyes, in the fashion shots and recomposed the photo and then shot the picture.

It takes practice but when you get the hang of it you can get sharp beautiful "Long Lens" fashion pictures.

Vintage shops and thrift stores...Oh how we love them! A vintage shop is full of vintage treasures, hand picked pieces that may or may not tickle your fancy. A thrift store is full of stuff.

A cornucopia of things, any thing. Some old, some new. You never know what you might

find and sometimes when the Thrift Gods smile upon you, you find a gem.

That diamond in the rough, “ I can’t believe I just found a .................... treasure”.

This vintage silk Armani blouse is one of those thrift store treasures. Rescued from a thrift store

and relocated to Aria’s closet. This thrifted treasure makes her smile every time she wears it.

A Fishin' Tail

Aria, learned to fish about a year ago. She had never fished before and had always found
it quite intriguing. The idea of catching your own food, ruff and tough survival stuff. So
when we moved to the sea learning to fish was at the top of her to do list.

She spent countless hours a day at the local fishing spot, with the real deal crusty fishermen.

At first she was “that girl” actually she was the only girl. She was in the way and couldn’t bait

her own hook or tie her own knots. Day after day, rain or shine she was there with her
trusty pole in hand. She became an eye bandit. Carefully watching these expert fishermen,
with each cast, each bait of the hook, each knot. She soon grew on those crusty fisherman,
learning, at their feet, like a grandson would, the secrets of these seasoned sportsmen.

This is a shot of her catch, a “Bonita”, (Bonita means beautiful in Spanish) on the day before Thanksgiving. A front had just come threw and the fish were biting! The Bonita were running and all the serious fishermen were out hoping to land one. Getting a bite was the easy part, landing a fish, that is where the skill comes in. Bonita are like bull dogs, they are a medium sized predatory fish related to the mackerel and tuna family. They are ferocious fish who hunt in packs and like to eat and run. When they hit and run, if your hook is in their mouth, the line screams off the reel and you had better hold tight! This particular Bonita ran her up and down the fishing Pier! She wrestled patiently with him for 20 minutes, a vigorous game of tug a war! She was one of three people who actually landed a Bonita that day finally earning her “Serious Fisherperson” merit badge.

On Thanksgiving day she was back for more! Out in the rain she landed this beauty. One of our fishing buddies Tao, who is an amazing fisherman and sushi chef offered to show us how to sushi fillet her catch. He explained how Bonita is a staple like tuna in the Orient. For Thanksgiving dinner Aria made Sushi, all we could eat fresh from the sea caught with her own two hands sushi!! and it was amazingly delicious :)

"Storm light", is the illusive magical light that only occurs with perfect conditions.

Ansel Adams said, when you see storm light, drop everything and take a picture of anything.

"Storm Light", occurs when it is cloudy from horizon to horizon and the sun is not covered.

It only lasts for a short period of time, several seconds to a few minutes.

It is Pure Magic!
